Artistic Journey: Crystals and Light
The first three crystals have finally come to life, crafted from frosted acrylic and secured with a robust liquid plastic weld. The joins are impressively strong, which gives me confidence as I move forward. Currently, I'm experimenting with iridescent and translucent vinyl for the outer surfaces, and, the effects have been quite pleasing. The cooler colours truly enhance the icy, ethereal feeling I aim to convey.
Lighting Tests: A Sparkling Challenge
The initial lighting test went reasonably well, though there are areas for improvement. One of my main concerns is the central light; it appears too 'pole-like' for my vision. I'm aiming for a more crystal like, sparkling effect. The plan is to program the lights using Mad Mapper, accompanied by a bespoke soundtrack that complements the visuals. Additionally, I want to ensure that the light is more dispersed within each crystal. For the next round of testing, I’ll explore different materials inside the crystals to achieve the desired aesthetic and atmosphere for the lighting.
The Lighthouse: Building Height and Reflection
Progress on the lighthouse is exciting as it nears its full height. However, a scissor lift will be necessary to install the top piece, as it’s too cumbersome to maneuver while climbing ladders. The acrylic mirrors have proven effective, but I’ve learned that they need to be screwed onto each section after a week of strong Velcro fastenings failed to hold. While the simple mirror panels beautifully reflect the crystals and create an illusion of height, I feel they might cause the structure to fade into the background too much.
To enhance the lighthouse’s presence and maximize the light from each crystal, I plan to tile diamond shaped acrylic pieces across the structure, leaving gaps that will be filled in black. Each tile will be positioned at a slightly different angle to create a mesmerizing mirror ball effect, scattering light in captivating ways. I’m also considering redesigning the top of the lighthouse to better reflect the angles of the crystals, perhaps making it pointed and faceted to capture the essence of what I’m trying to achieve.
