'When Loveliness Appears' Immersive Light, Sound & Environmental Installation

When Loveliness Appears

by Anne Bennett

When Loveliness Appears is a large outdoor light installation made up of many glowing ladybirds scattered across the landscape. Each one is oversized and softly lit, glowing in a range of colours as visitors move among them.

Ladybirds are often seen as symbols of good luck, but they are also an important part of the natural environment. There are thousands of different species around the world, not just red with black spots, but yellow, orange, white, pink and even blue. This artwork celebrates that hidden variety, showing how nature is richer and more colourful than we often realise.

A group of ladybirds is called a loveliness. This unusual and gentle name reflects the feeling of the installation — a quiet moment of beauty that appears unexpectedly. By making these small insects large and luminous, the work invites people to slow down and notice what is usually overlooked.

The installation also reminds us that many species are under threat from habitat loss and climate change. When Loveliness Appears is about good fortune, care, and the shared responsibility to protect the living world around us.
